The FAA issues three classes of medical certificates. The class required depends on the type of flying you plan to do.
First-Class Medical
Required for Airline Transport Pilot (ATP) privileges when acting as PIC in airline operations. This class has the most stringent standards and the shortest validity for ATP privileges.
Second-Class Medical
Required for Commercial Pilot privileges when flying for compensation or hire (excluding airline operations).
Third-Class Medical
Required for Private Pilot privileges and for student pilots prior to solo flight. This class has the least stringent standards and the longest validity. You can also Flight Instruct under this class.
BasicMed
BasicMed may only be used after a pilot has been issued at least one FAA medical certificate (typically a Third-Class Medical or higher) at any point in the past. BasicMed cannot be used for an initial medical.
